In June 2018, athenaResearch deployed a survey to nearly 1,400 practicing physicians to help draw a map for healthcare leadership of where to invest in teams and technology to ensure both the productivity and the wellbeing of their physician workforce. The survey attempts to understand and guide change in physician wellness by reducing physician burnout and increasing physician 'capability,' a core concept of the management theory service-profit chain in service industries, that can also be applied to healthcare.

According to our survey data, only 51% of physicians work for practices with high capability ratings (they have the tools, resources, and latitude they need to deliver care). This group of physicians is twice as satisfied, two-thirds more loyal, 36% less burned out, and 10% more productive than the group who do not work for a high capability practice. The business case for capability is strong.
